The Hyundai Genesis is no longer the flagship sedan in Hyundai’s fleet, its position was usurped with the introduction of the Hyundai Equus in 2010. That news doesn’t bother Genesis owners who are satisfied with the space of the large sedan, abundant quotes from luxury and exceptional value. . Plus, if they want more, they can shell out an additional $ 15-20,000 for an Equus.

Genesis renewed

Hyundai isn’t resting on its laurels with the Genesis, choosing to introduce a major mid-cycle update for 2012. Exterior changes include a new grille as part of a more aggressive front fascia, with larger intake openings and redesigned headlights. Daytime running lights, updated rocker panels, and new taillights are among the notable exterior changes scheduled for 2012.

Perhaps the most significant change for the Hyundai Genesis sedan is what enthusiasts will find under the hood. Both engines make a return, but a 5.0-liter V-8 will join the 3.8-liter V-6 and 4.6-liter V-8 to round out the powerplant offerings. All three engines will be paired with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, an in-house engineered unit with a manual shift option.

Fuel efficiency

Hyundai says the 3.8-liter engine will see performance improvements with a slight increase in highway fuel economy. In fact, the current V-6 engine has an EPA rating of 18 city mpg, 27 highway mpg for the Hyundai Genesis sedan, with estimates of 18 city and 29 highway for the 2012 model. Smaller V-8 enjoy a 1-mpg increase in highway mileage.

The V-6’s horsepower will increase from 290 to 333 and torque from 264 to 291 pound-feet, representing a 15 percent improvement in power. The 4.6-liter V-8 engine, which had previously enjoyed a performance boost in 2010, will see its horsepower increase to 385, up from 375 horsepower.

Range Topper

However, the most power will be derived from a robust 5.0-liter V-8, rated at 429 horsepower, making it the most powerful Hyundai engine ever built. That engine will be part of a new R-Spec package with special calibrations for the suspension, steering and transmission. In addition, this model will be equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish and dark chrome headlamp inserts.

The changes Hyundai is introducing with the Genesis sedan are in line with the company’s philosophy of delivering cutting-edge design and technology, segment-leading fuel economy and world-class value. Hyundai has already committed to updating the Azera sedan for 2012 and will launch the Veloster coupe in the same model year.

Hyundai Blue Link, the automaker’s hands-free infotainment and navigation system, is also on the way, providing one more product offering to convince buyers to consider this emerging Korean brand. There seems to be nothing stopping Hyundai, one of the fastest growing automakers in the world.
