Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a mild but highly contagious viral infection common in young children that spreads from person to person from dirty hands or contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include fever; sore throat; rashes and blisters on the tongue, mouth, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet; headache; tired; irritability; and loss of appetite. The infection most often occurs due to the coxsackie virus and is commonly seen in child care settings. Infected adults may not show signs or symptoms of the disease.
