If you can’t take your date to Venice, take her to The Spaghetti House for that romantic Italian evening.

London’s West End is a very good area to impress a date, with theatres, chic bars, cinemas galore, plus its many restaurants, many of which, let’s face it, are big bites of the wallet. The Spaghetti House, Haymarket is a welcome relief, offering affordable rates in a fancy ‘ristorante’; and the most important thing: it has excellent food to seduce your loved one.

Ironically located a stone’s throw from Eros in Piccadilly Circus, the vibe of this Italian restaurant is ‘casual chic’ with spotless tablecloths, good crockery, elegant seating and subtle low lighting. At the front outside is a small balcony of chairs and tables looking out over the hustle and bustle of London’s theater district, a romantic setting for a Facing.

One of the capital’s ten ‘family’ of restaurants, each with their own unique charm, this Spaghetti House has an impressively long menu, ranging from simple pizzas to delicious traditional dishes. Of course, there’s a healthy selection of Italian wines to keep you feeling good with your boyfriend.

There are a variety of options from antipasti and pasta, pizzas, specialties and even an Italian burger, all described in an unpretentious but enticing way. Consisting of Tuscan caciotta truffle and gorgonzola, served with walnuts, acacia honey and rustic bread, the Tagliere Di Formaggi E Noci (£6.95) has ingredients that contrast and complement each other, bringing out the best of intertwined flavours. The wonderfully succulent Funghetti Piccanti – sautéed mushrooms, garlic, chillies, tomatoes and parsley (£3.95) is simple but downright delicious. Each portion was generously served, as were the main courses.

The Scaoppa Napoli – slow-fried schnitzel topped with seasoned pangratto and a healthy helping of spaghetti napoli is an unlikely (for us Brits!) but very well conceived combination. The beautifully flavorful assemblage is full of subtle contrasts and is well priced at £15.95. Tangled with mussels, tomatoes, garlic, black olives, anchovies and capers (£9.50), the Spaghetti Puttanesca Alle Cozze is equally seductive and smooth in flavor. The salad was subtly seasoned and generous.

The dessert menu has eight delicious options. And how Italian, for the most part! Tiramisu served with Savoirdi biscuits, espresso, mascarpone and Disaronno liqueur (£4.95) and creamy Pannacotta (£9) are sure bets!

In short, Spaghetti House, Haymarket, with its attentive staff, will leave you with a very good experience, and the menu is one of those where you will want to try everything! So don’t forget the mouthwash for when you want to say goodnight to your date! But best of all, for all you mutual moviegoers out there, you’re just a stone’s throw from some of London’s best cinemas. Leicester Square’s range of cinemas are within walking distance and the Apollo Cinema is just down the road – perfect for dinner and a movie date!
