Part of what makes Newquay one of the best surfing destinations in the UK is the way the city is surrounded by beaches. We can count 12 beaches in Newquay. 8 within walking distance of the city and another 4, a short drive away. Among them we can find one of the most famous surf spots in the United Kingdom, Fistral Beach.

With Fistral Beach being the main west facing beach and attracting swells and prevailing westerly winds, this beach, like most here on the North Cornish coast, often offers a few Cornish waves.

But as we all know, the weather here in the UK is anything but stable or predictable and often these west facing beaches are too exposed to swells and strong winds coming from the west. When all other beaches fail to provide good surf, you can always rely on Surf Savior Newquay’s popular “Bay”, Towan Beach.

This bay is protected from these winds and can often produce a fun wave to surf when many other beaches in the area offer no protection. Also, it is bounded by the harbor wall on one side where a nice left is created when the swell hits. A favorite for the bride and groom!

Newquay offers waves for all levels and all types, depending on what you are looking for.

With autumn usually comes hurricane season and some good size waves can hit the Cornish coast. This is normally that time of year when all the UK surfers are on their toes, watching the swell forecast several times a day to make sure they don’t miss any movement in the ocean. This is also the time of year when summer is over, school has started, and the lines are less crowded.

Like any good surf period, everyone comes out of nowhere to enjoy the loot. From freelance builders finishing early, office workers taking extended lunch breaks, no matter what you do for a living, the swell is pumping and everyone is coming in.

On the other hand, if opening a surf school is part of your future plan, it’s probably not the best place to look. So, with a count of 25 surf schools in the Newquay area, being a surf instructor and giving freelance surf lessons would definitely be your best bet to increase your time in the water and enjoy the Cornish summer.
