I have always used dryer lint to stuff handmade toys and pillows. I have been doing this for years.

I was visiting a fellow craftsman and we got on the subject of dryer lint. I puffed up my chest and announced how I used it for years to stuff toys and pillows. She told me there was so much more you could do with it.

REALLY?

He then proceeded to explain how to make “moss”.

Since crafting is my passion in life, I just had to run home and try this out.

It is WONDERFUL!

Cheap and easy too.

With Halloween creeping up on me, I thought I’d share it with you. It’s a great way to authenticate those fake tombstones and statues to decorate your lawn.

You will need to:

  • green acrylic paint (I used two shades, one light green to brighten the dark fuzz, the other to color moss)
  • lint dryer
  • latex gloves (this is nasty under the fingernails!)
  • brush, optional (this is for applying but I only use my fingers)
  • plastic container (to mix it)
  • spray acrylic sealer

Wash one or two loads of laundry, then dry in the dryer. This should give you enough dryer lint. You will need a handful of dryer lint.

Put on the latex gloves.

Glue the dryer lint to the plastic container and spray a generous amount of white craft glue. Mix it with your hands until the glue is distributed throughout and has the consistency of meatloaf mix.

Add your two green colors and flatten them (Hint: I didn’t blend the colors all the way to make it look more natural)

Dab small globs here and there on your fake tombstone and let dry (Tip: be sure to apply to the base of the tombstone and let it “drizzle” where you think moss might grow). When dry, spray with acrylic sealer.
