If you ask the average podcaster “WHY” they’re doing podcasts, many of them will give you a blanket “I’m sharing my messages with the world” statement. But that doesn’t really answer the “WHY” of your podcasting journey.
If a person wants to “share their message” with the world, why not write a blog? Why not the radio? Why not television? Why did you choose podcasting as your venue of choice?
Now let me ask you the same question. Why are you doing podcasts?
Can you answer that question? Why is it so important to answer this question?
In the brief space I have here, let me try to explain the importance of understanding your “why” about podcasts.
Podcasting is a form of your own personal radio show. It’s audio only (there are video podcasts, but the technical definition of a podcast is audio only. Most podcasts are audio in nature).
Since there is no video involved, a successful podcaster must be a great vocal communicator. We’ve all heard speakers that bore us and put us to sleep. A successful podcaster will be able to tell a story with words. A podcaster must be able to draw the listener into the story and make the listener a part of the story!
A podcaster who understands the “why” will usually include the words “tell a story” somewhere in their explanation. For example, my own podcast is about helping Christian authors and business influencers tell the story of how they are impacting the world with what they do every day.
Notice, I am helping you “tell the story” to the world. It is not “me” who tells the story. I allow them to tell their story. I am the facilitator.
There are podcasters who are great storytellers. Many do not have guests on their show because they can tell their story themselves. Others are looking for someone (maybe you) to help them share their story!
Decide “why” you want to have a podcast and that realization alone will help you plan the path you want to take. Do you want to tell your own story or do you want to help others tell theirs?
It is not the same thing. But it will help you focus more and be more successful at podcasting!
