Kenya’s array of tourist attractions is second to none due to the unrivaled beauty and charm of the country. With sugar-sand coastlines, grasslands teeming with millions of wildlife, and mountains so high they touch the clouds, there is a wide variety of attractions for the visitor to enjoy. Tourist attractions in Kenya are diverse and can take the visitor to the depths of the ocean, come face to face with a pack of the world’s largest and fiercest lions, or dance in a circle with the fascinating Masai warriors.

One of the most spectacular sights that occurs from July to September is the Great Migration of wildebeest. Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebras cross the Serengeti into the Masai Mara National Reserve. Crossing the meandering Mara River becomes dangerously dangerous with crocodiles waiting to steal a meal or two.

National Parks of Kenya

The best way to see wildlife in the country is to visit one of Kenya’s many national parks. The best known of these is the Masai Mara National Reserve, where the annual wildebeest migration takes place. Expect to see lots of lions, elephants, and cheetahs here too.

– Lake Nakuru National Park is known for its millions of flamingos, as well as its rhinos, hippos and giraffes.

– Mount Kenya National Reserve is known for its amazing scenery with Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest mountain in Africa as its main attraction.

– The Amboseli National Park has excellent views of Mount Kilimanjaro and is home to a large concentration of elephants, some hippos and profuse bird life.

– Until now known for its man-eating lions, Tsavo National Park is now famous for its “red elephants”, hippos and crocodiles.

– The Aberdares National Park has impressive waterfalls along with leopards, rhinos and bongo antelopes.

– Nairobi National Park, in the heart of the city, is a habitat for black rhinoceros and endangered lions, leopards, giraffes and zebras.

– And, the Mombasa Marine National Park offers snorkelers and various glimpses of dolphins, parrot fish and many colorful coral reefs.

If you want to enjoy a few days by the sea, Mombasa is a must. With its pristine beaches to enjoy during the day and bars and clubs to party at night, this city is a very popular tourist town for those looking for a relaxing holiday.

Another of the beautiful coastal corners is Lamu. This tropical getaway looks like it’s straight out of the 14th century. Because the roads are so narrow that cars cannot travel on them, the main modes of transportation are on foot, by dhow, or by donkey. As there are no big resorts, night clubs or high fashion malls, Lamu is where the visitor goes to truly get away from civilisation.

Lamu’s beaches are relatively deserted and when the sun goes down, everyone goes to bed and gets up early at dawn. It is this isolation that attracts visitors seeking solace and peace.

Those in relatively good physical shape should plan on a hike to the top of Mount Kenya or Elgon or Longonot. While Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya, is not as tall as Mount Kilimanjaro, it is nonetheless more challenging, making a successful ascent to its summit much more than an achievement.

Hotels and Inns

There are many hotels and lodges in Kenya’s cities and national parks where visitors can check in and spend a few days savoring these and more amazing tourist attractions in Kenya.
