There was a time in my country, Nigeria, when the US visa lottery craze spread by contagion. It was in a frenzy equivalent to a festival. I was forced to dig deeper into what it was about. Men and women with college degrees, including those who were experts in their respective professions, received Green Cards to come to the US along with all members of their families. However, once they got here, their qualifications and training became completely irrelevant when it came to job placement.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening here. First, the country of origin loses the contributions to the growth of the country of these citizens in which much had been invested. Second, America needs the services of trained minds employed in unskilled labor. It is satisfied with its own production of skilled labor. Sustaining and growing a country’s economy is most likely a numbers game. However, I am ashamed to admit that I have never read a book on economics. Anyway, by observation, I have come to the conclusion that the volume of internal purchases and sales is a significant index among those that determine the state of the economy of a country. America is spacious and largely unoccupied. Populating it by choice is certainly a smart move.

The US economy is distinguished by the nature and status of the lower class. Compared to Britain, where I was a student, the US government doesn’t recognize you when you’re sick, jobless, or homeless. In the absence of a corset to cushion the harshness of living every day in a hostile world, citizens are always on their toes, working two or three shifts to make ends meet. This tough attitude has a pervasive influence on all facets of life. For this reason, the US stands out when it competes with other countries. However, it takes its toll on people’s mental health. Perhaps this is responsible for the large number of inmates in correctional facilities. The vicious circle could probably be broken by paying more attention to the dregs of society, who are now more neglected. This can lead to unpleasant consequences. Furthermore, the Bible says, “He who oppresses the poor despises his Maker, but he who has mercy on the needy honors GOD.” Proverbs 14:31.

The obvious indices of the growth of any economy include the volume of activities in all aspects of construction. There is no doubt that without the presence of immigrants, the various construction industries will collapse. The uproar over illegal immigrants exposed the intolerant nature of some citizens. The truth is that without these illegal immigrants, the country’s economy will grind to a halt. No forward-thinking government will give in to pressure from rioters to comply with all sorts of horrible suggestions to these illegal immigrants. They are of benefit to the country beyond imagination.

However, the future may not be without problems. Democracy is a numbers game. Very soon, immigrants will be in sufficient numbers to determine election results. Now, we have men and women who come into their professions in government. It is quite unfortunate that in the country, the burden of acquiring a college education is the responsibility of the individual. What are the chances that, in the future, there will be many who have not had an education beyond high school participating in government at various levels? If that happens, the result will be that governance will generally be discounted.

The preponderance of religion in the country is Christianity. The teaching of Jesus Christ is that we love our neighbor as ourselves. A Jew once asked Jesus: “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:29. The answer he got was a Samaritan who was not even expected to live within the borders. Furthermore, it is in his Law that Jews must take care of foreigners. Deuteronomy 14:29. Finally, Jesus Christ says: “Then the King will say to those on his right: ‘Come, blessed of my Father, take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. Because I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you came to visit me…Truly I say to you that everything you did for one of these brothers of mine little ones, you did it for me.” Matthew 25:34-40.

May GOD hurt America.
