There is no question that the people who own the suites/rooms you are renting or might rent in the future can seem intimidating. They seem to have the world on a string. They certainly seem to have something figured out. They, after all, own the suite you only wished were yours.

But what if it was yours?

Ask some questions. You better be able to answer BEFORE you run out without finding a new place.

First, you have to know what you are looking for. If the suite you’re looking at isn’t something you’d be proud to own, maybe you shouldn’t live there?

For example, if it’s too dark in the suite and you’d never (in a million years) think of buying the place because you just can’t stand living in a cave, then that’s probably a sign you should keep looking. .

Granted, the suite can “do it,” but if you’re staying for more than a month (and the lease will most likely be for at least six months), it may be more difficult for you than you want.

Ask yourself if you would be the owner. If you don’t want it, move on. It is a good litmus test for renting.

Second, how would you treat it if you had it? You see, the real secret to having a great relationship with your landlord (who, to you, probably never seem to interact with each other) is understanding that they just want things to go well. They value softness above all else.

With that in mind, when little things break, fix them yourself, just as you would if you owned the house. Sure, if it’s a big thing, call your landlord, but do the little things yourself. This will create a great relationship with your landlord.

It will also create an additional benefit. It will make your rental place FEEL more like you own it. If you spend even 10 minutes fixing something, you’ll feel much more like your suite is more than just a suite… you’ll find it’s become a home.

These two questions will help you determine which suites you would like to live in and which you would definitely NOT want to live in. They will also help you maintain good relationships with your landlord and create a true feeling of home in your rental property.

Also, one day you may be the owner of the suite, so you will be grateful for the good karma you invested now.
