# 1. Choose open cabinets

One of the biggest problems with small kitchens is that they can feel quite claustrophobic because there are too many cabinets crammed into this limited space. Removing them is generally not an option, because there are many items that need to be stored in the room. Open cabinets offer an effective solution to this problem because they do not create a “boxed” feel. These storage areas also give you the opportunity to use fancy jars, glasses, and china as ornaments.

# 2. Add a kitchen island

Small kitchens don’t offer enough counter space to work comfortably. A kitchen island can solve the problem of having a work surface, but such a major construction job will only work if the room design is minimalist.

The counter of the piece must be white (preferably marble) and its bottom must be open. This way, the island will not appear ‘cumbersome’.

# 3. Mix materials to create interesting designs.

Limited space does not allow you much space to create a beautiful interior. You can compensate for this by mixing a variety of materials and playing with the differences in textures and colors. Every functional part of the room – cabinet doors, countertops, lighting, ceiling, windows, floors, and fixtures – should be treated as an important design element. Keep this in mind when studying your kitchen remodeling contractor’s materials and looking for interesting combinations. Remember that to be attractive, the final look must be “unified” in color or style.

# 4. Opt for original and mobile seats

Even if you live in the apartment alone, you may want to entertain your guests in the kitchen at some point. Therefore, seats are essential, but benches and chairs take up too much space. There are some solutions to this problem. You can choose mobile benches and chairs that can stay in the living room or some other part of your home until you need them. In this case, you will need to take them around the house when preparing to meet your guests.

If you prefer to have stools fixed to your kitchen island, you will want to choose ones that are small, but large enough to accommodate an adult. Choose options made of transparent materials to give the illusion of a spacious room.

# 5. Incorporate glass details

Glass is the best material for small kitchens as it allows you to create an illusion of space. You can install glass countertops, cabinet doors, or a kitchen door. Depending on your floor plan, you may be able to install an adjoining room window as part of your kitchen remodel project. This will give the space a ‘lighter’ look, especially with strategically installed lighting.

# 6. Add a splash of color

If your kitchen is small, a single brightly colored accent can help visually expand it. It will constantly attract stares, tricking the mind into believing that the space surrounding this ‘centerpiece’ is larger than it actually is.

Please note that this piece does not have to be located in the center of the room. For example, you might install a bright orange cabinet in a muted white and gray kitchen. A few smaller accents in the matching shade will complete the look.

# 7. Expand the space with lighting

There are hundreds of original lighting fixtures that can help transform the space completely. Kitchen remodeling contractors should offer some ideas on how to use them more efficiently in your particular case. For example, installing incandescent lighting under pendant cabinets will “counteract” cool, bluish LED or fluorescent headlights, making the space seem more inviting. Hanging lights over the eating area will visually “lift” the ceiling.

# 8. Install premium flooring

A beautiful and efficient floor is vital for a small kitchen. Go for a checkered pattern as it is eye-catching and can visually expand the space. Since the room is small, you should be able to afford premium materials.
